Apple Releases Its 2008 Environmental Report for iPods, Computers
Apple has released its 2008 environmental report, detailing progress made in reducing the amount of lead, PVC, brominated flame retardants (BFRs), and other contaminants common to consumer electronic goods.
Among the high points: CEO Steve Jobs says the company is still on track to meet its stated year-end goals regarding the elimination of PVC, BFRs, and arsenic from its display glass. Apple has begun transitioning to energy saving LED screen backlights, has expanded its recycling takeback program, and is institutiing a phased program to reduce the company’s carbon footprint.
Apple came under fire from Greenpeace and other environmental groups for failing to match other computer manufacturer’s moves toward less toxic, easier-to-recycle products. Beware, Greenwashers: FTC to Tighten Green Ad Requirements in 2009
An article in Marketing Daily warns that the Federal Trade Commission plans to revise its “GreenGuides” in 2009, tightening standards which govern eco-friendly claims in ads. The move is likely a warm-up for stricter enforcement against companies that make dubious green claims in their advertising.
